About Spam

While the internet brings us many useful ways to bring you our message about Office Furniture, it also brings us many problems.

It has come to our attention that a large amount of SPAM has gone out that says it's from someone with our Burby domain name.  Some of the e-mails had names that we do not in reality have.  Others have had our valid e-mail addresses on them, though we did not send them out.

After doing research on this problem I have come to the conclusion that there is not much we can do to prevent this from happening.  The SPAMMERS are using computer programs (called "spiders") to search web sites for e-mail addresses they can use.  It is incredibly difficult to track the source of SPAM.  Tracking down the violators is tricky and time consuming, outside the scope of what we are able to do.

There are a few things we can do to minimize the threat.  One way is to not list our e-mail addresses in the text areas of our web.  In some cases we are changing over to using the words "Send email" with a hyperlink which will bring up your e-mail address system with the e-mail contact name there.  This is a way to avoid the "spiders" that might pick them up.  Another way is to avoid listing complete domain names.  Due to the fact that we host several state contract sites we can not do anything that would make our site incompatible with certain standards.  It's a fine balance between security and access.
